Monthly Meeting
6pm - 8pm
I would like to use this meeting to talk about the North American Mycoflora Project "Russula Of North America(taxa-based)", and how our club members can participate.
Russula species are some of the most colourful, beautiful, and misunderstood mushrooms in North America.
Their is a possibility of our club, and others around the country collecting, documenting, performing microscopy, taking DNA samples, and sending collections for sequencing, and addition to a fungarium.
Sequencing cost will be as low as $10 per collection, and tissue vials have already been ordered.
The plan is to use the information gathered by citizen scientist mycologist all over N.A. to update, and expand on the most comprehensive key to the Russula genus of North America online.
It is based on the book:
"Keys to the species of Russula in Northeastern North America"
3rd ed.
by Geoffrey Kibby and Raymond Fatto.
Published 1990 by Kibby-Fatto Enterprises in Somerville, N.J.
This update will hopefully include updated pictures, and DNA sequence data which has not been included in the past.
I hope everyone interested in learning more can make it out to this meeting.
Novices will have opportunity to learn right along with more advanced collectors.
This could lead to your photos, descriptions, et cetera being used in a future scientific paper, a website, or book. In the case of new species identified opportunity may arise to have one named after you, or by you.
A "members only foray" is being planned for the following Saturday afternoon, and email invites with location will be sent out shortly after the meeting.
